How it works

Frequently asked questions
- Does this work on a photo with a normal background?
- No. This tool clears white pixels connected to the edge of the image, so it works on flat white backdrops — logos, screenshots, and studio product shots. A photo of a person in a room, or anything with a colored or busy background, needs automatic subject detection instead, which is a different tool we are building separately.
- Why does the download have to be a PNG?
- JPG has no transparency channel. Saving as JPG would fill the cleared area back in with a solid color and undo the work, so the download is always a PNG.
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. The image is read and processed entirely by your own browser using the Canvas API. It never leaves your device, and nothing is stored.
- There is still a faint white or grey outline. How do I fix it?
- That is anti-aliasing — the soft pixels where the subject meets the background are not pure white, so they survive the first pass. Raise the tolerance slider until the fringe disappears. If you raise it too far it will start eating light parts of the subject, so move it gradually.
- Why is white inside my image still there?
- That is deliberate. The tool only clears white that connects to the outside edge, which is what stops it from punching holes through white text or the whites of someone's eyes. To clear white trapped inside the image as well, raise the cleanup slider — it clears progressively larger enclosed areas, and at 100 it clears all of them. If your logo is a ring or a hollow letter, turn it all the way up.
- Can I remove a black or colored background instead?
- Not with this tool — it looks specifically for near-white pixels. Support for picking a different background color is planned.
